What is Arginine?
Arginine is an amino acid involved in many vital substances such as proteins, collagen and elastin, hemoglobin, insulin and glucagon. When arginine is compromised, the body’s ability to handle glucose, facilitate insulin production and metabolize fat in the liver are all affected.
Benefits of Arginine?
Arginine aids in weight maintenance by facilitating an increase in muscle mass and a reduction of body fat. Low levels can also affect carbohydrate metabolism.
Arginine supports the building of new bone and tendon cells. Therefore, it can be effective for connective tissue concerns. It also may reduce the healing time of wounds. When scarring occurs during wound healing, the scars consist of collagen, which is rich in arginine.
Another major role of arginine is in detoxifying the body. It aids in liver detoxification by neutralizing ammonia. It converts toxins into harmless substances, and converts food into sugar as fuel for the cells. Arginine also breaks up fatty deposits in the liver keeping it free from congestion.
Citrulline
What is Citrulline?
L-citrulline is an amino acid that increases nitric oxide production, improving blood flow.
Benefits of Citrulline
L-citrulline is used as a sports performance and cardiovascular health supplement. L-citrulline supplementation results in reduced fatigue and improved endurance for both aerobic and anaerobic prolonged exercise.
Supplementing L-citrulline also increases ornithine and arginine plasma content. This means L-citrulline supplementation improves the ammonia recycling process and nitric oxide metabolism.
After supplementation, L-citrulline is converted into arginine in the kidneys. Supplemental L-arginine provides a spike of L-arginine in plasma, while supplemental L-citrulline increases arginine plasma levels over a longer period.
Citrulline promotes energy and assists with the immune system. It is required to detoxify the liver from ammonia, which is a waste product of metabolism from oxidation.
